Your guide to canned goods

Saturday - 23 September 2023

When you want a quick, delicious meal, canned goods (like cut fruit, marinated vegetables tand ready-to-use condiments) have always been a cook’s best friend. Read on to learn all about these pantry heroes!

Freshness guaranteed

What sets quality canned goods apart? How they’re harvested! From apricots to hearts of palm, cherries and all the rest, our fruits and vegetables are picked and preserved at peak ripeness so you can enjoy unparalleled freshness in every can.

The unbeatable shelf life

According to the Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ), canned goods are non-perishable items. That means manufacturers don’t need to list an expiry date since canned goods are safe to eat long after purchase. Their flavour and nutrients might start to change over time, however—check your canned goods for “best before” dates to find out when. Even so, there’s no health risk to eating them afterward! Want to get the most out of your canned goods? Follow these guidelines for how long to hold onto them.

Food Ideal storage length
Fruits Two years from the date of packaging
Vegetables Three years after date packaged
Leguminous plants Up to one year after date packaged
Tomato sauces and purees One to one and a half years after date packaged
Meat, fish and seafood Three years after date packaged

Food storage 101

Wondering how to store your canned goods so they last as long as possible? Here are a few ground rules. Store them in a cool, dry place that is clean and won’t freeze (metal cans should not be frozen). Low levels of humidity and light prevent cans from rusting.

When metal comes into contact with oxygen, it can corrode and contaminate the food. If you open a can and don’t use everything in it, you should transfer whatever’s left in the can into an airtight container and refrigerate.
